Episode 97: inb4 E3

Kyle has a lot to say about God of War and Hollow Knight. William finished Order of Ecclesia and trials Blazblue.  Kaz has more adventures in Skyrim and gets to her first real boss in Darksouls 3

In the news we cover many games and rumors: Bloodstained is getting an NES style prequel game, Rage 2 got leaked (it looks special), CODBLOPS4 is confirmed to have a battle royal mode and no single player campaign, Battlefield 5 gets a splashscreen teaser, and pokemon switch rumors continue to fly.  the Crew dives deeper to discusses the new open source adaptive controller that Microsoft is making,  Sony’s discontinuation of Vita cartridges, the closure of Boss Key Productions, Details of Nintendo switch online and more. Come pause with us!

Upcoming Games, Recent Stuff, and Rumors

Kaz – Microsoft introduced their new ‘adaptive controller’, aimed at making gaming more accessible to folks with disabilities.

It’s really neat, and they’re keeping it open source and are encouraging other people to build on it, even Sony/Nintendo. Very cool initiative. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fcK19CAjWM

Kyle – Sony is ending production of physical Vita cartridges in February of 2019. Final code requests have to be submitted next month. RIP Vita.

Kyle – Boss Key Productions is officially closed, per Cliff Blezinski on Twitter. Lawbreakers and Radical Heights just weren’t enough, I guess.

William – Nintendo released the details for Nintendo Switch Online

Featuring family plans, cloud saves, old games, and no Virtual Console. But $20 ain’t bad.

Kyle – Walmart Canada accidentally ‘leaked’ (aka posted) a bunch of games. Some of them seem real, others perhaps not.

Full list here! https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/pavyg8/walmart-canada-leaked-rage-2-bethesda-splinter-cell-e3-glitch

William – Well, we don’t have to speculate about what Sony’s showing at E3

Unless you think they have some surprises.  Death Stranding, Ghost Of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and The Last of Us 2

  • Gear of War 5. Halo 6 probably isn’t a thing this year given 343’s saying they want to take more time, and Microsoft NEEDS something new to anchor their presentation.
  • The Last of Us 2: Battle Royale (I’m not sure if I’m joking or not)
  • Kingdom Hearts 3 release date, and it’ll be in 2018
  • Square will announce a sequel to a beloved franchise, but with no release date. Maybe the World Ends With U2?
  • Nintendo will announce a new peripheral that no one asked for
  • Dr. Mario Switch? I dunno, it feels right.

Fire Emblem Switch, we might see some MP4 footage, we’ll see

I’ll predict Halo for you, Kyle

If there isn’t any FFVII remake footage, it’s not coming out until 2030

  • Bloodborne 2 trailer/date
  • Death stranding gameplay
  • New elder scrolls something
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Animal crossing switch
  • Diablo 4, save it for blizzcon

Episode 96: It’s all William’s fault

We’re back after two weeks! During the break, we were able to get together and play some party games, including Lethal League, Windjammers, and Crawl. William is still working on SS in Dustforce, and has also started playing Fire Emblem: Conquest and picked up his old save file in Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. Kaz has reached previously unexplored plotpoints in Skyrim, and abandoned them to become evil, she’s also gotten back into Dark Souls 3, but this time, she knows what she’s doing. Kyle is enjoying his time in Darkest Dungeon, and is extremely conflicted about the new God of War. For news, we mention the announcement for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and cover some points from Nintendo’s financial report: Kimishima is retiring as President, and sales are up. We also talk about Battlerite’s new battle royale mode, Nintendo continuing to support the 3ds, and a liitle bit about a dead game from Eidos Montreal, which leads us into a discussion about games that were unexpected in style, success, or concept to finish up. Come pause with us!

Upcoming Games, Recent Stuff, and Rumors

Battlerite, the arena-action-MOBA game, is adding a battle royale mode. Yep.

Nintendo is planning 3DS games for 2019 and beyond.

Confirmed in their annual investors’ call. Crazy.

Apparently Eidos Montreal was batting hard to try and make the next major Final Fantasy after doing Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Super Bunnyhop has a great video on it.

It’s really interesting, and leads into the THING OF THE WEEK.

Episode 95: CoD Blops Royal

William gets sucked back into dustforce, but has no prayer of SS’ing the entire game. Kyle spends some time with Snake Pass and edge lord Victor Vran. Kaz’s dreams comes true as she has been immortalized in Battle for Azeroth! In our new section we talk about Dark souls on the switch, a new Platinum collaborate game, question the choice to leave out the single player campaign in Black ops 4, but don’t worry, they’ll probably add a battle Royal mode and we mourn Konami’s history of bad choices. For our podcast thing of the week our twitch chat was raided and we have fun thinking of old video game titles that would make “awesome” movies

Upcoming Games, Recent Stuff, and Rumors

  • They’re adding a Battle Royale mode!

Polygon is reporting that Black Ops 4 isn’t going to have a single player campaign. Kotaku says it’ll have a Battle Royale mode, though!

It will instead have a small narrative focus as part of its Zombies/cooperative mode. Too bad they’re doing it with Blops, a lot of people love this series’ campaign.

Konami is ending its relationship with UEFA, the soccer organization that the Pro Evolution Soccer series is based on.

They have a new mobile Castlevania game that looks like hot garbage though. Konami makes me sad.

Episode 94: Melancholic

We’re back after two weeks! Kaz has come back from a con in Atlanta, got herself a new rig, and has caught up with her old self in Skyrim. William has finished Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, but still finds time to disparage Kirby. Kyle has found an amazing game in Celeste and a dissapointing game in The Evil Within 2. In our news section, we cover the Spyro trilogy remaster, talk about God of War’s new reviews, Minit, the Megaman X Legacy Collections, and Nikki Minaj(!). We also talk a bit about the shutting down of Steam Spy, the success of GTAV, and the conclusion to the relationship between Twin Galaxies and Billy Mitchell. Finishing up, we take a look at sad games; some that we liked, and the mechanics and methods used to enhance them. Come pause with us!

Upcoming Games, Recent Stuff, and Rumors

Steam Spy is shutting down thanks to privacy changes from Valve.

Profiles now have libraries hidden by default, so we all lose a valuable tool. Too bad.

GTAV has made an estimated $6 billion, which makes it the most successful media property of all time.

Just…. wow.  Think this changes how we think about/develop games and IP, or is it just a crazy outlier? https://www.marketwatch.com/story/this-violent-videogame-has-made-more-money-than-any-movie-ever-2018-04-06

Billy Mitchell has finally had all of his high score records purged from Twin Galaxies.

Not that he’s relevant anymore. https://www.twingalaxies.com/feed_details.php/1047/billy-mitchells-donkey-kong-and-all-other-records-removed/4

Episode 92: It’s Not a Phase, Mom!

It’s been another week! Kaz has finally finished Persona 4, and is playing some Skyrim and Kirby Star Allies (and talking to kids about cosplay) while looking for the next big thing, William continues moving through Fire Emblem Echoes, and wasn’t impressed by Azure Striker Gunvolt, and Kyle starts to feel the grind in Prey and elects to torture himself with Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. In news section, we talk about Nintendo’s Nindies Showcase, Sonic animation and karting, the Smash Invitational, GDC, the public releasing of assets, and the reception of some recent releases. We also take a look at the current status of Battle Royale games, the changes happening in Star Wars Battlefront 2, and the ending of the relationship between Ubisoft and Vivendi. To finish up, we have an argument about the ‘greatest games of all time’ and consider some candidates. Come pause with us!

Epic is releasing Paragon’s assets for free use in Unreal 4.

Battle Royale games are going crazy.

They’re both on mobile now, and it seems like they’re growing every week. Think it’s flavor of the year a la FPSes circa 2008 and MOBAs circa 2012, or is this something more lasting?

Battlefront 2 has revamped how its progression works.

I probably still won’t buy it, though. Fool me once… https://www.ea.com/games/starwars/battlefront/battlefront-2/news/progression-update

Vivendi’s attempted hostile takeover of Ubisoft has been repelled.

They’re selling their shares, and won’t buy any more for 5 years. The Guillemots win!

Episode 91: Still a Toys R Us Kid

This week, Kyle can’t help bu spend money buying old and bad games, William  plays more Shadow of Valentia, and Kaz finally gets the best Legendary in Wow. In the News we talk about Microsoft’s E3 plans and the future of the event as a whole, we mourn the closure of Kyle’s childhood with the announcement of the Bankruptcy and closing of Toys R Us, Dota’s questionable Pay to Win subscription and how it’s changing the philosophy of the game, and we talk about the potential of Celebrities and Twitch.  For our Podcast Thing of the Week we celebrate the Ides of March by talking about our favorite video game betrayals, Come pause with us!

Microsoft has big changes for its E3 plans. They are, but aren’t participating in E3, because they want more fan participation.

Will the E3 adjacent strategy pay off for them?

Kyle – Toys R Us is closing all of its US stores.

Sad, that was my high school job. Even Skylanders couldn’t save them, I guess.

Dota 2 is introducing some pay to win elements with a monthly subscription service called Dota Plus.

Looks… weird. It’s almost a disadvantage to new players, which is the opposite of what they need right now. http://www.dota2.com/plus

Twitch Prime now gives you tons of really good games for free, which is awesome.

Steamworld Dig 2 is one of the 5 free games next month. That’s crazy, it came out in October. https://blog.twitch.tv/level-up-your-video-game-collection-with-free-games-with-prime-785fac856490?sf184412156=1

Monster Hunter World is officially Capcom’s best selling game ever.

I can’t wait to see what they can do with a bigger budget and further streamlining. I’m excited for the future of the series!

Sony is getting rid of PS3 and Vita games in PS+ as of March 2019.

So goodbye Vita!

Episode 89: Pure Poetry

This week, William talks (again) about Xenoblade as a series in a (vain) attempt to wrap the whole thing up. Kyle manages to 100% Super Lucky’s Tale and grinds out some Heroes of the Storm matches. Kaz gets close to the end of Persona 4, guest stars on other podcasts, and manages to finally grind out a mount in WoW, all while gearing up to go to Sweden! In our news section, we talk about the Burnout Paradise Remaster, Warcraft rumblings, both Sonic racing and movies, Doom’s patch on Switch, and the Megaman Legacy Collection ports. We also take a look at copyright laws for online games and finish up with a small haiku session, where we describe different games via haiku and try to guess what they are. Come pause with us!

Episode 88: Finishing Touch

This week, all three of us have finished some games! Kyle finishes up Monster Hunter and tries out a cutesy platformer, William finally finishes up with Xenoblade 2 (for now), and dives right back into the anime with Steins;Gate, and Kaz completes Shadow of Mordor and closes in on the end of Persona 4. In our news section, we talk about Spyro remasters, Metroid Prime 4, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and a bit about Nintendo’s plans moving forward. To finish up, we have a discussion about the two new bills presented to the Hawaiian legislature, and the regulation of loot boxes and predatory microtransactions. Come pause with us!

Hawaii has introduced two bills to tackle loot boxes in gaming.

They’re aiming to prohibit sale of games with loot boxes to people under 21 and force companies to publish loot box probabilities. Both bills have several sponsors, so it’ll be interesting to see where these go. https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/7x4uoa/loot_box_legislation_established_in_the_state_of/

Activision Blizzard makes about half of its yearly revenue from microtransactions.

Call of duty has been around for a long time, they are out of wars to explore, let’s help them  by coming up with some new options

Call of dooties that should/shouldn’t exist:

Kaz- CoD: Saurus warfare. set in caveman era, the sentient dinosaurs rule but their ways are ancient and cruel. The time of man is at hand, dinosaurs are about to become extinct. II

Kyle – CoD: Biological Warfare. You play as a team of scientists shrunk down to combat the strangely-ethnic-looking diseases plaguing the United States of America.

William – CoD Digital Warfare – You are recruited by the American government to infiltrate Anonymous, the ‘hacking syndicate,’ gameplay is largely ‘coding’ minigames that function like mini CoD setpieces.  The most notable part of the game is the ability to play previous CoD games with your buddies in Anonymous.
