  1. Thank you for the spoiler alert on Chrono Trigger. I know, I’m a bad person for not having played it yet, but I finally realized it’s available on Android (the only platform I have right now that can play it) so I might be fixing that soon!

Anyhoo, I thought that Final Fantasy: Chrystal Chronicles had excellent music design! I mean, the music alone is good in its own right (I even bought the soundtrack for it on CD back in the day). But it especially does a good job at telling the story of each place you visit. There are so many great examples of this, but to me the most powerful one is the music of the town, Tida. Not really a town anymore, Tida is actually one of the “dungeons” you explore in order to obtain a drop of myrrh. It used to be a town, but fell to the miasma when its caravan failed to return. The place is filled with the undead as well as decrepit buildings and signs of what the place used to be like. The background music for Tida is at once eerie, foreboding, and mournful. Listening to it gives you such a poignant feeling of loss. In fact, I think the music’s crushing sense of despair actually makes the dungeon more difficult to clear than it otherwise would be. In most of the other dungeons, the music is at least exciting or threatening. In Tida, it just saps the soul and kinda makes you want to give up and die… just like its former inhabitants. Maybe it sounds like I’m being over dramatic, but it felt that way to me! In the game, you could go back and clear the dungeons multiple times, but Tida was one place I did not want to revisit.
